Welcome to Onrust Island, which is part of the historial park in the Thousand Islands off the coast of Jakarta. Onrust is the bigger island of the two and was an important port for the Dutch East Indies Company, or VOC. It was so popular that it’s activity is even reflected in its name - “Onrust” is the Dutch word for “never rest.” And it’s true that the island never rested: trading ships stopped at Onrust on their way to Batavia or came in for repairs, hajj pilgrims were quarantined coming back from Mecca, and the Japanese even used it as a prison in the 1940s.
