Palmer Keen said he knew more about gamelan music than the country it came from when he moved to Indonesia as an English teacher seven years ago. Now he has visited 27 provinces of the island nation and fallen in love with more than just gamelan music - like tarawangsa from West Java and yanger from Maluku. The self-described “DIY ethnomusicologist” documents his research on his blog Aural Archipelago and has gained thousands of followers on social media. Although technology has been blamed for the loss in popularity of traditional music in Indonesia, he doesn’t think the two forces have to in opposition to each other. Palmer is based in Yogyakarta.
