In this lesson, we will learn what a verb phrase is, how to form it, and many more things.
What is a verb phrase?
A verb phrase a combination of an action verb and a helping verb, which is also known as an auxiliary verb.
Action verbs- verbs that indicate an action. Ex- go, come, touch, eat, slap, kiss, learn, study, cook etc.
Helping verbs- as the name goes, verbs that help or support the action/main verb in the sentence
"To be"- is, am, are, was, were, is being, was being, are being, was being, were being, been, being etc.
"To have"- has, have, had
"To do"- do, does, did
Modal auxiliary verbs- can, could, may, might, should, would, will, shall, must, ought to etc.
Examples-
My mother (has cooked) food.
I (am teaching) English.
Nona (will help) me learn French.
Everyone (should meditate) daily to live a peaceful life.
Sometimes, a verb phrase has three verbs and- one action verb and two helping verbs.
Examples
1. I (have been teaching) English for years.
2. Riya (will be working) on a new project next month.
3. You (should have called) me yesterday.
A verb phrase gets interrupted and negative and interrogative sentences.
Atul did not come to the class yesterday.
Verb phrase- did come
Interrupter- not
I have not been to the Taj Mahal.
Verb phrase- have been
Interrupter- not
Do you meditate daily?
Verb phrase- do meditate
Interrupter- you
