In this lesson, we will learn what a gerund phrase is.
Before you understand what is a gerund phrase, let us understand what is a gerund in English.
What is a gerund?
A gerund is an "ING form of a verb(progressive form) that works as a noun in a sentence.
Let's take some examples and understand it.
1. Smoking kills you.
"Smoking" is a gerund here. If you ask the question "What kills you?", You will get your gerund- smoking. It's not working as a verb. Nobody is smoking; we are talking about something. In the name of something is always a noun.
2. I love teaching.
You always love something or somebody . Like you love a person, movie, a country, a phone, or anything. So "teaching" is the thing that I love.
What do I love? Teaching. So teaching is a gerund here that's working as the subject of the sentence.
Now let us understand what is a gerund phrase.
A gerund phrase is a phrase- a group of words that doesn't contain the subject verb combination- that works as a noun in a sentence.
Parts of a gerund phrase?
1. Gerund
2. Object
2.1 Direct object
2.2 Object of the preposition
3. Modifiers
Functions if a gerund phrase.
A gerund phrase functions as the following in a sentence:
1. Subject of the sentence
2. Object of the sentence
2.1 Direct object
2.2 Object of the preposition
3. Subject complement
Let us take examples and understand this. Let's take some examples of gerund phrases as the subject of sentence.
1. (Talking to my best friend) makes me happy.
2. (Making mistakes) is a part of learning.
3. (Marrying a Japanese girl) is his dream.
Examples of gerund phrases as the direct object of a sentence.
1. I hate (speaking loudly in a public place).
2. My father loves (making people laugh).
Examples of gerund phrases as the object of the preposition in a sentence.
1. Max is thinking about (starting a business).
2. Never be scared of (making mistakes).
Sometimes, people her confused between a participle phrase and a gerund phrase. Don't mistake a gerund phrase for a particular phrase.
A participle phrase starting with the present participle - ING form of a verb, works as an adjective in a sentence. It modifies a noun. On the other hand, Azhar unfreeze works as a noun in a sentence.
Eating loudly is a bad habit.
The guy eating loudly is my neighbor.
