How to Plant Clematis

Planting a Clematis Montana Grandiflora. A Clematis Montana Grandiflora will flower in Spring with wonderful white flowers.

The best time to plant pot grown Clematis is any-time of the year when the ground isn't hard or frosted. In this video we are planting in November.

Don't dig your hole right up against the fence, dig your hole about 6 - 10 inches away from the fence. Once you've dug your hole. Try it out, leave it in the pot and see if it fits comfortably. Leave a couple of inches around the hole so the roots can get into it. It needs to be deep enough to match the soil level of the pot.

You can leave the canes in, as they will help train the climber against the fence. Angle the clematis, so the canes sit against the fence. Start adding soil around the plant, then firm the soil in with your foot. Plant it, so you can just about see the top of the original compost from the pot. Once planted, don't forget to give it a good drink of water. This time of the year the soil is moist enough. There is also still enough warmth in the soil for it to start establishing before winter.


If you want to take the canes out, wait until it’s established and showing new growth.
