Working in the art world is not easy. I won't be here to tell you that it's a piece of cake but I also don't want to demoralize anyone or make people believe that the experience of a single positive or negative person can be the only way to do something. Today instead I tell you my story, my works in the world of art in Italy and abroad, in the hope of being able to give you some ideas to start your journey, but always with the idea that it is a story of personal life.

If you've already seen the video on my studies, you know that I have a three-year degree in Art History, a specialist in Economics of cultural heritage and a second degree in Art History taken in Palermo as a non-attending student. I start by saying this because my work experiences began while I was in university.

I'll tell you briefly about my first paid internship in Palermo because it was an experiment I wanted to do when I was 19. One of my passions in the artistic field has always been jewels. So during my second year of university I decided to take a diploma in the history and restoration of precious metals.

I finish the bachelor's degree, I win the scholarship and I can move to Milan. I am asked if I would be available to work in the Archive across the university for one or two afternoons a week to rearrange newspaper excerpts, publications and materials related to exhibitions and new works.

Part of my university credits are for an internship that I could theoretically only start in the second year and so I go to the secretariat and they make me sign some forms in which I decide to add credits to the first year and start immediately.

Here comes the end of the specialist, the end of the scholarship and I need to find a job. So we come to the second chapter of this story: my part-time year at Palazzo Reale in Milan in the exhibition office. I am 23 years old and studying for my second degree to keep the door of teaching open for me.

It is suggested that I look into the civil service. It goes on like this even when I finish with the civil service. Obviously the work in the artist's studio and in the archive is always very intense but the fact of being able to carry on writing or other collaborations excites me.

And we come to the third point: among the various collaborations as a consultant, I was offered to act as assistant curator of an exhibition linked to a topic that in theory is very far from what I am dealing with.

At the age of 26, however, after completing the main projects I'm working on and my second degree, I decide to leave the job in the Archive from which I learned everything I know and start a new adventure. I want to go abroad.

I don't know where to start but I speak good English and the idea is that of a PhD or a job in a museum. First choice America where I send several applications.

Second choice England and I arrive here thanks to the University of Palermo by participating in Erasmus +. The university grants you a scholarship of around €400/500 for work experience abroad. You must find an employer who is willing to be a part of the program.

The experience is over, I'm 27 and I understand that there is a world of private companies. In Italy I had collaborated with private galleries, with publishing houses thanks to the Archive but I had never looked for work in the private world.

So after nine months in a company not related to the art world we come to my current job. I have been dealing for 3 years with the purchase of furniture items and works for an American company with various offices around the world including London.
