Why does Liechtenstein exist?

It's a tiny nation in the middle of Europe, surrounded by three empire-building powers... and Switzerland. It was a subject of the Holy Roman Empire and Austria, briefly a part of Napoleon's Confederation of the Rhine, and later became a part of the German Confederation. Under its princely house, the Liechtenstein family, it survived German Unification and all of the turmoil of the 20th century until this day.
