Do the Kandils (Holy Nights) Take Place in the Qur'an? Are the Kandils Religious Days?
Dr. Yahya Şenol

In order to understand whether something is from religion, we must first examine the Holy Qur'an and see if it was imposed by God and whether it was implemented by the Messenger of God. If both of these are, that is, they are commanded by God, and have been imposed by His Messenger then it is from religion. One thing that God does not command and the Messenger does not practice is not from religion. Therefore, the five kandil nights that are famous in our country are as follows:
On the twelfth night of the month of Rabiul-Awwal, the Mevlid kandil (mawlid an-nabi / the birth of Prophet Mohammad),
The first Friday night of the month of Rajab, Regaib Kandil (the night of Prophet Muhammed's conception),
Twenty-seventh night of the month of Rajab, Miraç Kandil (lailat al miraj / Prophet Mohammad's rising to sky),
The fifteenth night of the month of Sha’ban, Beraat Kandil (Laylat al-baraa / the night of repentance)
The twenty-seventh night of Ramadan is the night of Kadir-Decree (laylat al-qadr / the Qur'an's first appearance to Prophet Mohammad).
It is easy for us to understand whether these nights are from religion or not by looking at the Qur'an and the practice of the Messenger of God. When we look at the Holy Qur'an, we see that there is an independent surah on the night of Kadir. In the Qur'an's 97th surah, in Surat al-Qadr, God Almighty speaks about the Night of Kadir, He is teaching us that it is better than a thousand months. The Messenger of God, in the course of his life, spent the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan, always different from other times, worshiped more. He also advised us Muslims to make good use of the last ten nights of Ramadan. Therefore, we can say that the night of Kadir is Qur'anic origin night celebrated in the same way as today. Only which night among the last ten days of the month of Ramadan is not clearly explained. We can't say anything like it is the twenty-seventh night of Ramadan, but we can look for this night on the last ten nights of Ramadan.
When we look at the holy nights except the night of Kadir, we have no clear information. After the night of the Kadir, there is poor evidence about the night on the fifteenth night of the month of Sha’ban, which is the night of Beraat. There is a weak set of hadiths, but all of these hadiths are weak, and no provision can be made of them, as Abu al-Ibn al-Arabi, one of the Maliki rulers, points out. Already in the life of the Messenger of God, as is celebrated in the present day celebration of a Beraat night is not encountered. Furthermore, Mevlit Kandil is a night celebrated on the occasion of the birthday of the Messenger of God, but neither in his life nor his friends after his death, his family has celebrated such a night. The Mevlid Kandil was celebrated for the first time in Egypt during the Shia Fatimid State in 350 years after the Hijra. For the first time, it is not possible for something to come out of religion which appeared then. The same thing applies for Regaip Kandil also, there is no data to be celebrated by the Messenger of God, and Ashâb-i kirâm (Blessed companions of Prophet Muhammad) did not celebrate such a night. It is a celebration that has emerged much later. The night of Miraj, celebrated on the twenty-seventh night of the month of Rajab, was not celebrated by the Messenger of God, was not known by Ashâb-i kirâm, it is a night that emerged later on.
As a result, the remaining four nights except for the night of Kadir are not prayers but traditions. Thus in the Qandil Section of the Islamic Encyclopedia of Turkish Directorate of Religious Affairs this situation is very clearly stated. Therefore, as Muslims we are under an obligation to know what is prayer and to behave accordingly.
