Today we'll visit one of Cambodia's most famous temples, the temple with the tree on top! This temple was made world famous in the early 2000s by Angelina Jolie in the film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Enjoy the video!
Ta Prohm, known as the 'Jungle Temple' or the 'Tomb Raider Temple', is the modern name of a Buddhist temple near the city of Siem Reap, Cambodia, approximately a half-mile or one kilometer east of Angkor Thom on the southern edge of the East Baray. It was built in the Bayon style largely in the late 12th & early 13th centuries & the name means "Ancestor Brahma" although it was originally called Raja Vihara meaning "Royal Monastery". It was founded by the Khmer King Jayavarman VII as a Mahayana Buddhist monastery & center of learning dedicated to his mother. Almost 80,000 people were required to keep the monastery functioning including over 2,700 officials & 615 dancers. The temple was built without mortar &, after it was abandoned, trees took root in the loosened stones. The towering trees sprouting out of the ruins & the lush jungle surroundings have made it one of the most popular temples with visitors to Cambodia. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1992.

This accordingly cemented the temple's status as an iconic tourist attraction for visitors worldwide ever since.
