An enzyme called creatine phosphokinase
An enzyme called creatine phosphokinase (CPK) is important for muscle function. The CPK isoenzymes test is a way to measure the levels of this enzyme in your bloodstream.
CPK can be broken down into three separate parts:
CPK-1 is mainly found in your brain and lungs.
CPK-2 is mostly found in your heart.
CPK-3 is found in your skeletal muscle.
Why the Test is Performed
This test may be used to:
Diagnose heart attack
Evaluate cause of chest pain
Determine if or how badly a muscle is damaged
Detect dermatomyositis, polymyositis, and other muscle diseases
Tell the difference between malignant hyperthermia and postoperative infection
When the test is ordered?
A physician orders a CK test, if he or she suspects any muscle damage or muscle disease like muscular dystrophy in the patient's body.
The test may be ordered when a person suffers from severe injuries, trauma and extensive burns.
