They use oxidative metabolism for energy. So they are resistant to fatigue. Accordingly, they have high number of mitochondria, and larger quantity of myoglobin giving them red appearance. Their glycogen content is low. Fast fibers are seen more abundantly in fast contracting muscles. They are further divided based on whether they are fatigable or note. Type 2a fibers are resistant to fatigue. They use oxidative metabolism as well as glycogen for energy. They have higher number of mitochondria, and abundant glycogen. Their high myoglobin content give them red appearance. Type 2b fibers are fatigable. They relay on glycolytic pathway for energy. So they have high glycogen content and fewer mitochondria. lack of myoglobin, makes these fibers white.
