You ever wonder how St.
You ever wonder how St. Louis got it's name?
Probably not. But now that I got your attention, the "Old Cathedral" (as it's fondly known as) is inextricably linked to the early settlement of the Gateway City and a Catholic king-turned-saint.
Founded in 1764 by French fur traders, St. Louis was named after Saint Louis IX, King of France (who lived from 1214 to 1270) with a plot of land dedicated to the Catholic Church. He was crowned king at the age of 12, where during his coronation, he bound himself to behave as God's anointed. While other kings would claim to do the same, King Louis IX was DEVOTED to his people and Catholic faith.
He founded hospitals. Visited the sick (even those with leprosy). He united France, lords and peasants alike. Every day, he had 13 guests from among the poor to eat with him, with more served meals near his palace (which Louis often served in person). He died leading a crusade, where he and his army were decimated by disease.
The legacy of Saint Louis IX spread faster than any disease, especially among the French. When the city of St. Louis was founded, settlers quickly started building to what today is referred to as the Old Cathedral. When plans for the Gateway Arch were started, the only building that avoided being razed on the Mississippi River riverfront was the Old Cathedral due to the historical significance for the city.
