Pula, Croatia is a hidden
Pula, Croatia is a hidden gem in Istria. In this Pula city tour, we visit some of Pula's best sights. Boasting the Pula Arena and delicious food, Pula is a charming city with so much to offer.
The first stop of our Pula walking tour was at Forum Square. It's an old Roman Forum and the main square in Pula, Croatia. We recommend getting a coffee at Cvajner Gallery. The cafe has a fantastic terrace with views of the Temple of Augustus. Named after emperor Augustus, it is the main attraction in Forum Square.
After leaving the Roman Forum, we walked along Pula Bay to get to the Pula Cathedral. The street that runs along the cathedral is Kandlerova Ulica. It's a tourist street with cafes and souvenirs.
Right off of Kandlerova Ulica is Pizzeria Jupiter. We recommend sitting on their terrace to enjoy the delicious pizza. After lunch, we headed to the main attraction in Pula, the Pula Arena.
The well-preserved Roman amphitheater in Pula was once used for gladiator fights. It now serves as a concert and event venue. We recommend paying the 70 kuna to tour the arena.
After touring the Pula Arena, we walked up the street to Fortuna for gelato. They have a nice terrace close to the Twin Gate.
The city of Pula has three remaining gates, the Twin Gate, Gate of Hercules, and Arch of the Sergii.
After walking through the Twin Gate, we climbed up to the Fortress Kaštel. From the fortress you can get excellent views of Pula.
From the fortress, we made our way to the Arch of the Sergii. This triumphal arch is also called the Golden Gate. Near the arch is the James Joyce Monument. You can sit at a table with a statue of the famous author that once lived in Pula.
Next we set out to find a well-preserved mosaic called the Punishment of Dirce. It's located in a parking area and was discovered after WWII.
Our last stop was at St. Maria Formosa. It's a chapel from the 6th century.
