DENJIRO: Today, I’m going to perform an experiment using a homemade generator. Something surprising is going to happen to this crew member standing on this step. I’m going to pass a PVC pipe through the round apparatus she’s holding. Now we’re going to cause friction with scarves. We’re going to move the pipe as we rub it.
BOY: Her hair is standing up!
DENJIRO: Look at how much her hair is standing up! This apparatus is able to produce a high voltage of 100,000 volts. First, we rub the pipe with a scarf to produce negative static electricity. Inside the apparatus are electrodes that look like teeth. It stores static electricity through those electrodes. Static electricity is stored in her body as well, through the apparatus. As negatives repel, her hair stood up. To prove that static electricity has been stored, let’s discharge the electricity. Here I go.
NARRATOR: He discharged the electricity by bringing metal up to the apparatus. The static electricity that was stored in her body escaped, and her hair went back to normal. If we make the room dark, you can clearly see the discharge of 100,000 volts.
DENJIRO: How were we able to create such a high voltage? The key is in how we sent static electricity through the inside of the apparatus. If you send electricity through the outside of the apparatus, it gets repelled by the static electricity that has been stored in the apparatus. Therefore, you can only store so much electricity, and you can’t raise the voltage. If we discharge... as you can see, the voltage is low, so the discharge is weak. On the other hand, if we send electricity from the inside... I can store lots of static electricity since it does not get repelled by the static electricity that is already stored, and therefore I can raise the voltage.
