DENJIRO: A capacitor is a device that stores electricity. It’s something indispensable for electronic devices such as smartphones. Today, I have something called a capacitor cup, which uses the same principles as a capacitor. I’m going to store static electricity in this cup. Watch what happens when I bring the cup up to some fuel.
BOY: It caught on fire!
DENJIRO: There was a spark discharge, and the fuel caught fire. Now, let me explain how a capacitor works as I create a capacitor cup. First, you wrap aluminum foil around a cup. It’s difficult to wrap it as is, so make a mold by cutting up a plastic cup. Cut aluminum foil to match the size and shape of the mold. You’ll be able to easily wrap the cup with foil this way. Make two of these cups and stack them together. In between the cups, I’m going to insert an electrode I made by bending a piece of aluminum foil. The capacitor cup is now complete.
By rubbing a PVC pipe with paper, negative electricity is generated on the pipe. I’m sending the negative electricity into the capacitor cup’s electrode. When doing this, the positive charges in the aluminum foil of the outside cup get attracted to the negative charges on the inside, and the negative charges of the outside cup get repelled. As a result, you get left with negative static electricity on the inside and positive static electricity on the outside. Electricity gets stored as these two charges attract each other.
When you let the aluminum foil on the inside and outside come into contact with each other, an electric current flows, and you get a discharge. This is how a condenser stores and discharges electricity. Here’s something else you can do with a capacitor cup.
I’m going to take this bag filled with hydrogen and oxygen, put it in this pipe, and let the capacitor cup discharge electricity. Here I go. The bags exploded, and the confetti in the pipes flew up.
I hope energy will bring you all happiness. Our magic word is "Happy Energy!”
