Presented today is this Art Deco box wall clock, made some time in the 1930s by the ODO clock company out of France. This is the first French clock in my collection, and I was very lucky to find it at a flea market for a small fraction of the typical asking price for these clocks. When I first bought it, this one needed some work on the case and movement, as well as a new pendulum.. A few months later, it is now up and running, and is easily my favorite out of all my wall clocks.
Like all of my chiming clocks, this one features a spring-powered, pendulum-driven, three-train movement, which runs for about eight days on a winding. It plays progressively longer segments of the Westminster melody every fifteen minutes, on four very long, beautifully tuned steel chime rods. At the top of the hour, it chimes the full tune, then strikes the number of hours on a separate set of four chime rods, tuned to a rich and brilliantly shimmering major chord. French chiming wall clocks are truly famous for their chimes, and given the richness and beauty of the ones in this example, I can definitely hear why! However, should there be need of silence, there is a pull cord for each sets of chime and strike hammers, which will lift them away from the rods. This method of silencing has a few advantages... First, you can choose whether to silence the chimes only, strike only, or both; this is not often the case. The other advantage is that silencing does not stop the chime and strike trains from running, thus ensuring that all three springs are equally exercised and released by the end of the week.
