Presented today is a fairly recent and exciting new find for me. This is a dual chime, Westminster/Trinity tambour-style mantel clock, made by HAC (Hamburg American Clock Company) out of Germany around 1926. Known as the *Celebrate*, these clocks were manufactured exclusively for Geo. Borgfeldt, a New York-based retailer of jewelry, clocks, watches, etc., between 1926 and 1932. Celebrates were housed in a variety of case styles, mostly variants of tambour or drumhead design, although a relatively small number of beehive-style cases were also used. At the heart of this clock beats the movement no. 64, HAC's first generation of dual chiming pendulum movements for the Celebrate line. The no. 64 movement was used in 1926, before being replaced with a new and improved model, the no. 865, in 1927. Along with this clocks low production number of no. 805, we can therefor deduce that this is an early Celebrate from 1926. Every quarter hour this clock chimes progressively longer segments of a choice of two melodies, either the well-known Westminster chimes, or the sweetly haunting Trinity chimes composed for Borgfeldt's clocks. At the top of the hour it plays the full melody, then strikes the number of hours on two of the six clear, brilliant-sounding chime rods. This is a contrast to later models using the newer movement, which struck the hours on a three-note major chord. The effect on this clock is more muted, more mellow and contemplative, and is just as beautiful in my opinion. As always, comments, questions, and/or corrections to my information are always welcome and appreciated. Enjoy!
