In this episode, I will talk about Yi Bang-won, posthumously known as Taejong of Joseon, the third king of Joseon 조선, 朝鮮 and fifth son of Taejo, Yi Seong-gye, the founder of the Joseon Dynasty. His mother was Queen Shinui. He greatly helped his father in toppling the Goryeo dynasty, notably by assassinating Jeong Mong-ju. Taejong was King Sejong’s father.

Taejong abolished private armies, revised land taxes, instituted a system of identification for the population (known as hopae 호패), freed thousands of slaves, created a strong central government with him, and only him, at its head. He promoted Confucianism and demoted Buddhism by closing many temples. Taejong also instituted the sangso 상소, a way of sending one’s grievance to the king. He also founded the Uigeumbu 의금부, secret police and royal guard.

I will take a brief look at his son Yi Je, Grand Prince Yangnyeong 양녕대군 and how he didn’t want to be the next king of Joseon.

Taejong initiated the invasion of Tsushima (기해 동정, 応永の外寇) to get rid of the Japanese pirates that threatened his kingdom. This took place under his son’s reign but it shows that Taejong was the real power behind the throne until his death.

He’s a controversial figure, obviously because of the many brutal assaults on both his family members and government officials alike, but he’s also remembered for improving the lives of people, strengthening national defence and laid down a strong foundation for this young Dynasty. His son, Yi Do, later King Sejong, succeeded him.
