DENJIRO: Today, I’d like to show you a coilgun, which fires objects using electricity. A capacitor, which stores electricity, is attached to this coil. Pay close attention to this rocket right by the coil. Let me turn it on. Three, two, one, fire!
GIRL: Wow!
DENJIRO: Let me use this apparatus to explain how the rocket was fired. I have a frog attached to a wooden stick. There is a metal rod attached to the bottom. Let me insert this into the coil. Now let’s run electricity through the coil. When I let this metal rod touch the metal plate, electricity starts to flow to the coil.
NARRATOR: Let’s send electricity to the coil for a brief moment.
BOY: The frog jumped!
DENJIRO: Let me explain. Running electricity through the coil produces magnetism in the coil. Since metal is attracted to a magnet, the metal rod was pulled into the coil. If I turn the electricity off the moment when the speed of the metal rod is fastest, it will fly away.
A coilgun uses this mechanism to fire objects at high speed. The rocket earlier had metal attached to the tip. Also, instead of a switch, the apparatus had aluminum foil. When electricity flows through the aluminum foil, it gets burned and torn, therefore turning off the switch. Due to the electricity, the metal is pulled in to the coil with great force. Since the switch is turned off right after the rocket gets pulled in, the rocket gets fired at high speed.
We launched the rocket earlier using the electricity of one capacitor. Now let’s try launching the rocket with lots of electricity from five capacitors. Three, two, one, fire!
NARRATOR: A higher voltage in the coil means a stronger magnetic force.
