The real truth about how gamers use VPNs. Whether you're a pro gamer or casual, here are all the reasons you might need a VPN.  A few reasons why a person might use a VPN would be, for example, to access content that would otherwise not be available in the region. It could be to hide their identity and IP address, keep their anonymity or maybe to just be able to torrent safely. You could overcome geo blocking and get access to gaming content that's not available in your area, maybe some MMOs or multiplayer games that aren't accessible just yet in your region. Like when Black Desert online was exclusive to Korea. You could even use a VPN to find better deals in other parts of the world. Or maybe you just want to buy a game that's blocked in your area for whatever reason, another motive behind using a VPN for gaming could be to match with players from different provinces. Sometimes in some games, it could take very long to find players within your region. Connecting to a VPN could be a very useful way of counteracting the inactivity of players in your region, or just the possible lack of servers within the area of your residence. Although you'd most likely be playing with a less than ideal Ping. One more reason a VPN can be useful while gaming is to prevent DDoS attacks. Once an attack is initiated, it's impossible to stop. So the best defense is prevention when using a VPN. Your internet traffic is channeled through an encrypted pathway to an external server, which hides your true IP address. Another common way to mitigate a DDoS attack is to implement rates Limiting. rate limiting is used to control the amount of incoming and outgoing traffic to and from a network. For example, let's say you are using a particular services API that is configured to allow 100 requests per minute. If the number of requests you make exceeds that limit, then an error will be triggered. This is definitely going beyond the realms of VPNs. Internet Service Providers regularly throttled gaming connections that use too much bandwidth, and online multiplayer gaming is reliant on bandwidth. connecting to a VPN means that the ISP can no longer monitor how your traffic is being used, meaning your ISP can no longer throttle your connection and you can enjoy a generally smoother gaming experience. It seems like using it VPN while gaming did not necessarily enhance the experience or lower my ping in any capacity, players often complain about the issues that are introduced by VPN acting as the quote unquote middleman. As the VPN encrypts your data and protects your anonymity. That very process takes up resources and consequently decreases your download speeds. So it is generally better for your multiplayer experiences to not use a VPN, especially if you're playing games that rely on split second decision making and reactions. Though it's important to note that ExpressVPN made nearly no difference in my pain, and was much less intrusive in terms of connection and packet loss compared to proton VPN. So if you insist on using a VPN while gaming ExpressVPN seems to work very well. But in the case of having a very powerful connection provided by your ISP, you might not know is a big difference even if you gain while your VPN is still on. But most people don't have such exceptional connection speeds. So it's better to keep it off while multiplayer gaming, especially if you're running or playing in tournaments. But in some cases where you might be in a country where you don't have nearby servers for the game you're playing, it might improve your let's say, 300 millisecond ping by a little bit if you switch to other servers. But all in all, it's very rare when that's the case. While it's true that some ISP might block peer to peer connections,
