Grand Mosque Of Brussels Schuman Cinquantenaire Park Belgium 🇧🇪
Brussels' Great Mosque French: Dutch: The Great Brussels Moschee The Cinquantenaire Park is home to the Grote Moskee van Brüssel. Ernest Van Humbeeck, an architect, designed the initial structure in an Arabic style for the Oriental Pavilion of the National Exhibition in Brussels in 1880. A massive canvas painting was housed in the pavilion at the time: Panorama of Cairo, created by Belgian artist Emile Wauters, was a huge hit. The building, on the other hand, began to slowly deteriorate in the twentieth century as a result of neglectful upkeep.
On an official visit to Belgium in 1967, King Baudouin gave the building to King Faisal ibn Abd al-Aziz of Saudi Arabia in exchange for a 99-year rent-free lease. The building was converted into a place of worship for Muslim immigrants to Belgium, most of whom were from Morocco and Turkey at the time. As part of the deal, imams from the Gulf area would be hired. Although their orthodox Salafism was traditional.
