Archaeologists have determined that Uplistsikhe is one of Georgia's earliest urban settlements. It developed into a significant political and religious center of the nation due to its strategic location in the center of the ancient kingdom of Kartli, or Iberia, as it was referred to by Classical authors. The mythical Uplos, son of Mtskhetos and grandson of Kartlos, was credited with founding the town in medieval Georgian literature due to its age and importance.
