High tech, branded methods, unique teaching methods, what works?
Key points:
1) Such content works great for advertising and for television.
2) The result is often different from what we experience in reality.
3) What happens if we remove the method AFTER spoiling them with branded gadgets, methods, etc.?
Will they then refuse to learn?
4) For this reason, I don't use humour in every single lesson. I'm strict sometimes, and lenient other times, depending of various factors.
I don't want students to learn ONLY when the teaching is fun.
Some work is not meant to fun - e.g. grammar can be dry.
So if we give in to their requests, then we are encouraging them to cherry pick.
Ever have problems with children choosing what to eat?
This is exactly why we should not encourage such behaviour.
In sum, instead of looking for the next best method or next best technology that'll work, I suggest explaining to them that if they are truly
interested in learning, then the method is secondary. They will learn when the environment is conducive. They will learn when the environment doesn't give them exactly what they ask for. I think in the long term, students will reap the most benefits and cope better in school and with life if they adopt this approach.
