How to test a PC power supply quickly #Shorts

** WARNING!! ** If you're not qualified working with electricity or electrical circuitry, you should not attempt this procedure.  Improperly performing these steps could damage the power supply, cause a fire or worse, cause injury or death.  Do not work on any electrical or electronic circuits without proper training and qualifications.

If you have a PC power supply laying around and want to quickly see if it even works at all, you'll likely just grab the AC power cord, plug it in and expect to see the cooling fan turn.  This is a common mistake and often people think the power supply must be completely dead because they'll not see or hear anything happen and they'll throw a perfectly good power supply away thinking it's bad.  What many people don't know is PC power supplies often require being connected to a PC motherboard before they'll even turn on.  To test a personal computer power supply by itself, disconnected outside a PC case, a couple pins on the PC power unit's motherboard connector must be connected.

With the power supply disconnected from any power source, identifying the largest/longest connector on the power supply wiring harness is usually the connector that would go to a personal computer's main circuit board known as the motherboard.  Next, identify a single green wire in that connector's group of wires.  Bend a metal paperclip into a U-shape and carefully insert it into the female pin connected to the single green wire in the harness motherboard connector.  Bend the metal paperclip to insert the other end to any of the female pins connected to a black wire.  Plug A/C power cord from a wall outlet to the power supply A/C input connector.  Turn on the power supply switch.  If the power supply isn't completely dead, its cooling fan should turn on.  Some power supplies require an actual load to turn on, though.  Sometimes it's necessary to also connect an additional cooling fan to one of the power supply power harness connectors to provide some workload before the power supply turns on.

Additional testing requires using a DVM (digital volt meter) to measure the DC volts produced by the power supply.  Usually, setting a DVM to 20VDC measuring range is sufficient but it depends on the maximum direct current voltage the power supply is rated to generate.  Clipping the DVM's common lead to the paper clip then probing with the DVM's positive lead into various pins on the motherboard connector will reveal 5VDC, 12VDC and 3.3VDC power connections.  This test at least determines the power supply is mostly working but doesn't guarantee it's entire functionality.  Power supplies can fail once under additional stress like the full-load it may encounter connected to an actual PC and it's various graphics and/or other peripheral circuit boards.

This method is useful when trying to simply determine if a power supply has the ability to turn on at all versus being entirely dead before using it to begin a PC construction project or if wanting to give away or sell any surplus power supplies from salvaged or deconstructed personal computers.
