Updating Forester Navigation System
After owning our 2018 Subaru Forester Touring Edition for over five years, it occurred to me this past Summer I wondered how do the maps in the navigation system get updated? I don't subscribe to "Starlink" so I presumed the maps won't be automatically updated from a service to which I do not subscribe. I'd always been curious what the MicroSD card slot purpose was in the entertainment/navigation head unit. After pouring through all the manuals, I saw some odd reference to a 3rd-party website referenced in the foot-notes regarding the navigation system. I followed the link to that URL and found it was the right website for finding updated maps for my Subaru Forester. Coincidentally, I soon-after received a letter offer to a reduced price map update for our Subaru Forester. I downloaded the necessary application ("Subaru Toolbox Gen2"), registered as a new user then claimed my free maps update, though, after loading them I found them labeled as "Q4 2020" which were still four years newer than the "2016/2017" maps I'd seen labeled prior to the update.
It seems updating these Subaru Forester navigation maps is confusing, though. Even here on YouTube it seems there's a difference in the way Foresters nav maps are updated compared to other Subaru models like the Outback, Impreza and Crosstrek which seem to use a USB thumb drive method with some years even able to update via the Starlink smartphone app. To confuse matters even more for the Forester, it seems starting with 2019 Foresters, those models may now seemingly use a particular website like the other Subaru Forester models to start the process of updating their in-built navigation maps. In my short time searching online, I came to the conclusion that 2018 Foresters and older models are still somewhat behind the updating curve requiring manual ejection of the navigation stereo system head unit's microSD card to be updated via an application downloaded and installed on a PC or Mac. Once paid-for and updated after a surprisingly long download and installation process (over 45 minutes for me), the microSD card is re-inserted into the head unit allowing it to access the updated maps.
