Are you thinking about earning a PhD?  For some students this can feel like a dead end or too daunting.  Maybe the path seems long and hard, or maybe it seems like there are too many things blocking the way. But the Ronald E McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program known as “McNair” is here to help you navigate this journey. How? Let’s take a look!

When you join McNair, your McNair Director becomes your co-pilot.  We will schedule advising sessions with you that will help to clear your path to PhD programs.  Together with McNair Scholars, we will cover a variety of topics, like
1. how find a research lab to conduct McNair-funded research,
2. how to conduct research presentations,
3. how to write research papers,
4. help you explore graduate schools,
5. provide academic support, and so much more.  

In some sessions we will focus on personal development where we will evaluate your strengths, talents, and research interests. This will help us understand who you are and what you are good at. Once we have a good understanding of who you are and what you’re good at we will be able to guide you through career exploration and connect you to PhD programs that fit you!

For many students figuring out how to pay for graduate school can cause them to feel lost on this journey. The McNair staff will help you learn about fully funded PhD programs and assist you with finding and applying to Fellowships and Scholarships, so you can more easily reach your destination.

That’s not all!  McNair will provide opportunities for road trips to visit graduate schools, attend research conferences, educational field trips, and participate in cultural events.  All designed to help you along your journey to further your education.

McNair also provides an immersive scholarly research experience.  For 10 or 9-weeks in the summer you will have the opportunity to do conducted scholarly research under the guidance of a faculty mentor who has experience in the discipline you’re interested in conducting research.
And you might even grow your friendship base by getting to know other McNair Scholars within the program and Scholars you meet at national McNair Research Conferences. And the best part about all of this is that McNair, and everything we offer is completely FREE!
