Walking again after an ankle sprain is usually scary and painful. After the swelling goes away, there might still be pain and stiffness.

The most common question we get from our patients after an ankle injury, especially ankle sprains, is, “Can I walk on a sprained ankle?”

The answer to this is not black and white and depends on how severe the injury is, what kind of support you’re using, and how much strength you have in your ankle and foot.

Walking for longer distances can flare up the ankle pain and cause it to swell and hurt again. This might develop into chronic ankle pain if it keeps happening.

Certain muscles in the ankle and foot get weak right after an ankle injury. This causes the injured ankle to not move correctly, other muscles to compensate and walking to be affected.

If this never gets addressed, it may lead to ankle arthritis and cartilage damage later in life. For some people, they never develop full confidence back in their ankles so they can be fully active and do exercise.
