Exploring Assateague Island in Maryland - Wild Horses and Beach Camping at the Assateague State Park

Assateague Island is home to 100s of wild Spanish horses that have roamed the wilderness beaches since the 16th century. Assateague Island's wild horses and ponies are heavily protected and they have in turn given the seashore the status of a wildlife refuge.

The wild beaches of Assateague Island are home to not just horses, but also rare types of flora and birds. During the nesting time of certain migratory bird species, the parts of the beach are often closed.
