"Satnam Sri Waheguru Sahib Ji": A Salutation to the tradition(s) of Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple), Amritsar
This is just a small video but nevertheless I would like to dedicate it to my elder granduncle, Ustad Bhai Gurcharan Singh "Kanwal" - poet, writer, singer, percussionist - for all the gifts, love and affection that he has endowed me with, and who first taught me Raga Asa...
Note: I first shared the "secret" about this melody line at the Guru Nanak Dev University in 2003, I think, with my elderly friend and fan, Dr. Noel King, Dr. Balwant Singh Dhillon, the present head of the Center on Studies in Sri Guru Granth Sahib, GNDU, Prof. Jodh Singh, Prof. Dharam Singh and others, also present. Attendees were surprised. I was surprised to see them surprised. If I were to be granted to sing this for as long as I am granted time, I'd not only be glad, even grateful...
भाई बल्दीप सिंह का गायन किया हुआ "सतनाम सिरी वाहिगुरु साहिब जी" प्रस्तुत है. यह धुन श्री दरबार साहिब अमृतसर के आँगन में हर सुबहः गाई जाती हैं. इसका मूल्य शायद हम सब गवा बैठे थे कि यह भी राग आसा में निबद्ध है और जैताल में परोई हुई है. यह रिकार्डिंग हम अपने दादा-भाई उस्ताद भाई गुरचरन सिंह "कँवल" को समर्पित करतें हैं कि जिन्होंने हमें राग आसा सबसे पहले सिखाइया था.
