Kurur and Kaimukku were two Namboodiri priests at a Goddess Durga shrine located in the dense forest of Western Ghats. Every day they used to walk on the wild and rough mountain tracks bare feet. This went on for many years.
One day when they were returning home after the worship, the two Brahmin priests became tired and decided to rest under a tree.
An old woman appeared before them and offered them some fruits which they gladly accepted. After consuming the fruits, suddenly they became very refreshed and energetic.
Next day when they passed the same tree they saw a huge elephant standing in front of them..Beside the elephant stood a beautiful golden coloured Goddess.
From that day onwards, the two priests worshipped the Goddess under the tree.
Kurur- the older priest of the two was getting old and he found it difficult to walk all the way through the mountain. He was saddened by this.
But that night, the Golden coloured Goddess appeared in his dream and consoled him by saying she would appear in the nearby pond and he can worship Her there.
Next morning, Kurur with many other devotees went to the pond and waited there. Soon, two beautiful hands started raising from the pond as per the promise.
Unable to control his excitement, Kurur jumped into the pond, swam towards the hand and held it tight.
Immediately, the hand turned into a stone and became still.
With the help of Kaimukku, Kurur worshipped the Hands.
Kurur then instructed the then local ruler, Shekhari Verma Valiya Raja of Palakkad for constructing a temple for the Hands. Thus, the famous Emoor Bhagavathi temple was built. It is surrounded by five lakes and is located in Palakkad District of Kerala in India.
