Sage Durvasa, one day became very angry with Indra- the King of Gods, and cursed all the Gods to lose their stength and power
Knowing this, Asuras under the leadership of their King Bali, started fighting the devas  to conquer the three worlds.
The Devas rushed to Lord Vishnu for help. He suggested to consume the amrith or elixir from the Ocean of Milk to regain the lost power. To get the amrith, they had to churn the ocean.
Do you know in olden days how milk was churned to get butter? Like this! A plunger is dipped in a pot of milk with a small rope tied to it and is moved back and forth, and the butter is formed.
Similarly, to churn the ocean, the Devas used a tall mountain Mandhara. As a rope, they used Lord Shiva's snake- Vasuki.
But since the Gods had lost their strength, they were unable to do their work. For this Lord Vishnu suggested to take the powerful Asura's help. The Asuras afreed to help in return for a portion of the Amrith.
Together, when they started the work, Mount Mandhara started sinking under the Ocean.
Lord Vishnu took the form of a huge tortoise  and supported the mountain.
The great churning began.
After churning for a long time, Dhanavantri, the heavenly physician emerged from the ocean holding a pot containing amrith- or divine nectar .
As soon as this happned, both Devas and Asuras started fighting over the pot of Amrith.
Garuda- Lord Vishnu's vahana took the pot and flew away to save it from Asuras.
During this time, a few drops of amrith fell on four places on earth- Haridwar, Prayaga, Trimbak and Ujjan.
Kumbh Mela is celebrated at these four places every twelve years for this reason. People believe that after bathing there during the Kumbh Mela, one can attain moksha!
