Remember: The formula for feet and inches to build a Vertical Antenna is 234/frequency you wish to be resonant on.

In my case, I built this antenna with the baseline of 40 m to work the middle of the phone band at 7.225MHz. 234/7.225 = 32.4 feet.

From there, I cut a total of four ground radials of that length and spread them out 90° apart.

I then added the radiating element for 40m (32.4 feet long) to the DX Commander multiband Vertical Antenna.

Remember: your radiating element and ground radials must be the same length.

I then cut ONLY The radiating element for 20 m to add to the vertical antenna. No additional ground radials.

Again, I selected the middle of the 20 m phone band at 14.225 MHz. 234/14.225 = 16.449 feet long and added it up the antenna.

The last vertical antenna I added was for 17m. I chose 18.135 MHz. 234/18.135 = 12.9 feet long. That measured cut of wire then went up the vertical antenna mast.

My SWR readings were as follows:

17m: 2.3:1
20m: 1.17:1
40m: 1.43:1

It’s important to note that my SWR curves were very flat at under 1.7:1 across all of 20 m and all of 40 m with just four ground radials.

In the next show, I’ll do a full review of the antenna and show the differences with four radials and up to eight ground radials to see what the difference will be. Stay tuned!

I’m going to add first two additional ground radials cut at 40 m and see what the SWR does. I will then add a final to ground radials again, cut for the same 40 m length of 32.4 feet long and see what that does for the SWR reading.

Ham Radio Live Show 102 Takes a brief listen to three of the top commercial broadcasting Microphones produced today. The Electrovoice RE 320, RE 20 and RE 27.

These three microphones are the top choice of local and network radio and television stations throughout the world. They can also be used with your ham radio. In this episode, I compare the three of them with the way they sound as well as explain to you how you can use them to connect them to your ham radio transceiver.
The goal of the channel is to help get people licensed and on the air!

I also try and help those with licenses to learn about real product reviews of ham radio gear and accessories.
