STORYLINE:

Russian troops are bracing themselves for possible trouble on the border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan.

Russia has a 25-thousand-strong military contingent in Tajikistan, positioned along the border with Taliban-ruled Afghanistan.

Russia describes this as a "safety precaution" against possible intrusion by Islamic extremists.

It says its border guard troops confiscate tonnes of drugs every year, illegally shipped from Afghanistan via Tajikistan and on to Europe.
