F23 wakes up on the nest after she incubated the egg for the evening. M15 arrives early with some grasses - he is so thoughtful 💗 He spreads them and F23 gets up and goes to the attic to take a break and M15 takes over the incubation of the egg and rolling it. (Shift change #1)

M15 takes a quick break and leaves the egg while he finds a big stick and brings it back to the nest and places it on the rails. F23 is now on the inner limb enjoying her break while M resumes incubation. M15 will get up and give the egg a roll and then settle back down on it. M15 gets up and we have great closeups of the egg ♥ There are some blood stains on it from F23's delivery - which is perfectly normal. F23 returns to the nest - (shift change #2) and resumes her incubation of the egg.

During the next two hours, F23 incubates her egg and M15 will bring in another couple of sticks - finally she takes a break and M15 resumes incubation of the egg (shift change #3) M takes a short break and we have more closeups of the egg before he returns to incubate the egg.

This is what you will be seeing for the next 35-40 days or so while both parents will take turns incubating and rolling the egg. Today the egg was left alone for periods of time which is also normal for the first egg. This is called delayed incubation. Both parents will leave the egg uncovered for short periods of time until the second egg is laid. This delay will most times cause the hatching period between the eggs to be closer together & help reduce competition between the chicks. The delayed incubation slows down the growth of the embryo for egg #1 and then full incubation will begin with the laying of the second egg.The parents also will roll the egg frequently - this helps keep the temperature even throughout the egg and prevents the yolk from sticking to the shell. We are witnessing a miraculous event with M15 & F23's egg and hopefully we will be seeing her lay her second egg in about three days. Thank you for watching!
