Here is something that Balamurali does, time and time again. He takes something that is already beautiful and elevates it to the sublime. Listen to his alapanai in Hindolam . What a wondrous and magical journey he takes you on, through unexplored bylanes and passages of this ragam, touching familiar ground now and again before wandering off again into enchanted new worlds. Annavarupu Ramaswamy’s alapanai takes you to more realms of beauty. And then - the kriti! Word by word, musical phrase by phrase, slowly, leisurely, gently, he unveils the beauty and attributes of the Lotus-Eyed, cloud-dark tressed Kamakshi, goddess of three cities, granter of boons and safekeeper of the truth. This is a musical opus that is a match for the magnificence of the great Goddess.

The Swara Kalpana section is pure pleasure, vintage BMK. The first swara is an unhurried, simple S G M D Ni-rajakshi. It is non-gimmicky, completely natural, and only BMK can pull this off. The fast section full of his musical jokes, flawlessly executed. But he is not done. He has a fresh supply of beauty and thrills in store for us. He returns to the slow speed and further explores the raga, picking up the pace again, alternating with the violin and mridangam. Note how sensitively Umayalpuram Sivaram provides the accompaniment, perfectly echoing BMK’s light touch.
