Balkh is a small cityin the Balkh Province of Afghanistan, about 36 kilo meters northwest of the provincial capital, Mazar-e Sharif, and some 74 km south of the Amu Darya river and the Uzbekistan border.
Balkh is historically the center of ancient religions, Zoroastrianism and Buddhism, as well as one of the richest and Aryana cities, since the beginning of the latter's history. The Persians also knew the city as Zariaspa and the ancient Greeks as Bactra, giving it the name Bactria (they also called the city Zariaspa). It is well known as the center and capital of Bactria or Tokharistan. Marco Polo described Balkh as "a beautiful city and a great city". Balkh today is a large ruin, located about 12 kilometers from the right bank of the Balkh River, at an altitude of about 365 m (1,198 ft).
The French Buddhist Alexandra David-Néel associated Shambhala with Balkh, and suggested the Persian Sham-i-Bala ("raised candle") as an explanation of its name. Similarly, Gurdjieffian J. G. Bennett published the idea that Shambalha is Shams-i-Balkh, the Bactrian sun temple.
