The work of Afsharid caused the price to rise in the city. The ruler tried to fix the low prices and sent the Afsharid army to Delhi's Paharganj market to convince them. However, local merchants refused to accept the low prices, leading to violence in which some Afsharid soldiers were attacked and killed.

When rumors spread that Nader had been killed by a guard at the Red Fort, the Indians attacked and killed 3,000 Afsharid soldiers and riots broke out on the night of March 21.[13] Nader, outraged by the massacre, retaliated by ordering his soldiers to make Delhi known as qatl-e-am (massacre - qatl = murder, aam = public, in public). On the morning of March 22, Shah sat in Sunehri Masjid and Roshan-ud-Daulah.

Then, with the beating of drums and the blowing of trumpets, he drew his great sword and with a loud explosion there was great joy and fear and excitement among the Afsharid soldiers who were there. This marked the beginning of the attack and the massacre. Almost immediately, the full force of the Afsharid army turned swords and guns on the unarmed and defenseless civilian population. The Afsharid soldiers were given complete freedom to do whatever they wanted and promised to share the wealth of the looted city.

Areas of Delhi like Chandni Chowk and Dariba Kalan, Fatehpuri, Faiz Bazar, Hauz Kazi, Johri Bazar and Lahori Gate, Ajmeri and Kabuli, inhabited by Hindus and Muslims, were soon covered with corpses. The Muslims, like the Hindus, began to kill their wives, children and themselves rather than submit to the Afsharid forces.

It is estimated that in a six-hour day on March 22, 1739, approximately 20,000 to 30,000 Indian men, women and children were killed by Afsharid forces during the massacre of the city.[16] The exact number of people killed is uncertain, because after the killing, the bodies are buried in pits or burned in cemeteries. corpses were large without any accurate record of the number of people who were burned or killed. In addition, about 10,000 women and children were slaves, according to the representative of the Dutch East India Company in Delhi.
