Areas of Delhi like Chandni Chowk and Dariba Kalan, Fatehpuri, Faiz Bazar, Hauz Kazi, Johri Bazar and Lahori Gate, Ajmeri and Kabuli, inhabited by Hindus and Muslims, were soon covered with corpses. The Muslims, like the Hindus, began to kill their wives, children and themselves rather than submit to the Afsharid forces.
It is estimated that in a six-hour day on March 22, 1739, approximately 20,000 to 30,000 Indian men, women and children were killed by Afsharid forces during the massacre of the city.[16] The exact number of people killed is uncertain, because after the killing, the bodies are buried in pits or burned in cemeteries. corpses were large without any accurate record of the number of people who were burned or killed.
