These would be really fun to serve at a birthday party, everyone gets their own cake in a jar, all you need is a spoon! Jars can be decorated with "Happy Birthday" labels and can be personalized for birthday party guests.

Thank you to Lucas Rousseau for today's intro graphics!  It has my cow kettle and my duck cups in it!

I just did a search and there are other YouTube videos out there on how to make rainbow cake in a jar, but not many. :)

How to Make the Brightest Rainbow Cup...

I found the vanilla cake recipe here:
http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/foo...
I found the cake itself to be tasty and the texture of the batter is perfect for these rainbow cakes in a jar.

3/4 cup butter (if you use salted butter omit the salt in the recipe)
1 1/2 cups white granulated sugar
2 eggs
2 tsp vanilla extract
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt (if you use salted butter omit this)
2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 1/4 cups milk

Cream sugar, butter and vanilla together and beat well.  Add the eggs and mix well.
Add the flour, baking powder, salt, flour and milk and beat until combined.
Divide batter into 6 bowls and tint with desired rainbow colours.
Transfer batter into 6 piping bags.  Pipe batter one colour at a time into the jars (I used 1/2 pint jars, holding one cup).
You don't have to grease the jars because the cake will be staying in the jar and eaten from the jar.
Make sure that each colour is relatively level and touches the sides of the jar.  When you are done the jar should be just over 1/2 full each layer is about 1/2 inch wide.
Place filled jars in a pan with sides and fill the bottom of the pan with 1/2 " of water.
I used room temperature water, but I don't think it matters too much.
Bake at 350F for about 30 minutes until a skewer inserted in the center comes out clean.
Cool completely, scoop out some cake if it is too close to the top of the jar and won't give you room to add frosting and still fit on a lid.
Frost as desired, here is the buttercream frosting I used in this video:
Decorating Cupcakes #10:  Cute Monste...

I have read that some people will take out a "core" of cake out of the center of the cake and inject frosting down inside so there frosting in every bite.

I found the Amy Sedaris link and some helpful instructions as well as some very cool pictures here:

I learned from this blog why my cake mix cakes in a jar didn't turn out.

Answers to anticipated FAQs:
This recipe will most likely make approximately 8 half pint (1 cup)  jars or 16 small 1/2 cup jars.
You don't have to grease the jars, I found the cooking spray left a haze on the inside of the jars, obscuring the colours.
To store these, cover them and put them in the refrigerator.  These are not canned like preserves and won't keep any longer than regular cake.
I bought my piping bags on ebay, they came from Hong Kong and they were about $4 for 100 of them shipping included, very good price.
No you can't use cake mix, if this answers your question, I'm guessing you didn't make it to the end of the video ;)
