The dish consists of green chili peppers cooked with a generous amount of cheese. It can be prepared with either fresh or dried chili peppers, and the type of cheese used is typically a local Bhutanese cheese, although substitutes like feta or farmer's cheese can be used outside of Bhutan.

Here's a basic recipe for Ema Datshi:

Ingredients:
- 6-8 green chili peppers (sliced lengthwise)
- 1 large tomato (sliced)
- 1 onion (sliced)
- 2 cloves garlic (minced) or 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 200 grams of cheese (feta or farmer's cheese)
- 1 tablespoon ghee or butter
- Salt to taste
- 1 tsp oregano & chilli flacks ( optional)

Instructions:
1. *Prepare the chilies*: Slice the green chilies lengthwise. If you prefer a milder dish, you can remove some of the seeds.
2. *Cook the vegetables*: Heat ghee or butter in a pan. Add the sliced onion and minced garlic, and sauté until they become soft and translucent.
3. *Add the tomatoes and chilies*: Stir in the diced tomatoes and green chilies. Cook for a few minutes until the chilies are slightly tender.
4. *Add the cheese*: Crumble the cheese and add it to the pan. Stir well to combine.
5. *Simmer*: Lower the heat and let the mixture simmer until the cheese melts and forms a creamy sauce, about 5-10 minutes. Add salt to taste.
6. *Serve*: Ema datshi is traditionally served with red or white rice.
