We are introduced to a lot of characters here, and some of the foreshadowing that comes to fruition later in the novel begins.

George and Lennie we know from last chapter. George is smart and quick, Lennie is simple and slow.
We meet:
Candy- old man who is a "swamper" or Janitor on the farm
Candy's Dog- hella old, yo
The Boss- in charge of the farm
Curley- the Boss's son. Was a lightweight boxer, likes to fight. "Little man syndrome."
Curley's Wife- young, flirtatious newlywed
Carlson- big gruff man, wants to kill Candy's old stinky dog.
Slim- jerkline skinner- basically means he's real good at driving the mules that pull equipment on the farm. He is handsome, intelligent, and strong.

We begin to see some more themes of the novel including Fear and Harshness of Reality.

Let us also talk briefly about the “N word,” using the Lord’s name in vain, and the other colorful insults present in Steinbeck’s work. We may not agree with the language and stereotypes present; BUT we can learn nothing from them by erasing them. It is essential we view and listen to Literature exactly as the author wrote it in order to capture the true and correct perspective and intention of a historic piece of writing like this; our own bias, though not unimportant, must be set aside and reserved for later critique.

The fact was then and remains today: these people might be different than you. It doesn’t matter if it is the presentation of Lennie’s accent (based upon the movie), Candy’s disability, the color of Crooks’ skin, or how he is treated because of it that offends you: differences should be celebrated, explained to those who don’t understand, and talked about regularly, rather than ignored or simply washed from the story. Literature was meant to be enjoyed as written whether we think the same way as the author or not.

Lest we forget: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; OR ABRIDGING THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
