Of Mice and Men Chapter
Of Mice and Men Chapter 3 was written by John Steinbeck.
We learn about George and Lennie's past in this chapter- it is revealed that George knew Lennie's Aunt Clara and so when she died he just sort of started taking care of him and never stopped. He opens up to Slim- who, although the boss signs the paychecks, runs the farm socially. Carlson takes Candy's dog and shoots it- and right after that, Slim goes to fix up a mule in the barn. Curley the boss's son thinks maybe his wife is cheating on him with Slim, and so goes to catch them.
While the rest of the men run out to view the possible fight old Candy listens in on George telling Lennie about the farm they are going to buy one day- and offers to pitch in his savings himself. With his contribution, they may actually get to buy their land... They are daydreaming when all of the men come back in, Slim and Curley yelling at each other. Lennie is still smiling about the farm, but Curley thinks he is laughing at him, so he starts punching Lennie.
George tells Lennie to "Get 'im!" and Lennie, with his idiot savant strength, totally smashes Curley's hand, breaking it to bloody pieces. He will never box again, but everyone says he had it coming. George asks if they will get kicked off of the farm and secretly worrying about losing out on the money they need to buy their own property. Slim convinces Curley not to tell, and the chapter ends with Lennie having forgotten being beaten to a bloody pulp and asking if he will still get to tend the rabbits- showing he is very one-track minded and fixates on one thing like some people do.
The hard, farm-life / Great Depression lesson of things needing to be killed or gotten rid of when they aren't useful anymore or are a drain on the others is seen in this chapter. (foreshadowing) The themes we see are Strong vs Weak and Everyone is Disempowered in Some Way.
