Abstract: The goal of this lecture is to provide the audience an introduction to what is Bayesian statistics, and to indicate where in medical research it is improving methodology. We begin with how to view probability; then introduce conditional probability and Bayes Theorem. We discuss the importance of this theorem in statistical inference and describe the notions of prior, posterior and predictive distributions. After emphasizing some useful features of the Bayesian method, we give examples of topics in biostatistics where the Bayesian approach is particularly useful.
