On April 11, 2023, the Shiveluch volcano in Russia erupted, sending a massive plume of ash and gas up to 10 kilometers high into the air. The eruption was the latest in a long history of volcanic activity at Shiveluch, which is part of the larger Sheveluch volcano complex in the Far Eastern region of Russia.
According to the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology in the Far Eastern region, the recent eruption was one of the largest in recent years, and residents in the vicinity were advised to stay indoors to avoid exposure to ash and gases.
