Day turned to night for some residents in the far eastern Kamchatka region when a volcano erupted spewing ash as high as 20 kilometers into the sky. The eruption of the Shiveluch volcano took place on Tuesday, local time.
The resulting ash cloud covered about 108-thousand square kilometers, an area approximately the same size as South Korea, and buried some villages in ash as deep as 8-point-5 centimeters.
A red aviation notice was issued over fears the ash cloud could affect aircraft flying in the area.
Experts say the volcano has since calmed but haven't ruled out further ash clouds.
The volcano is one of the biggest and most active in the region and last erupted in 2007.
