Panic attacks are very common (about a third of the population will have a panic attack every year), but can be incredibly scary and upsetting, particularly when the person does not know what is going on.  In this video, I will be discussing some of the symptoms that people typically experience in panic attacks, including:
- Increased heart rate, pounding heart
- Shortness of breath
- Muscle tension, shaking, trembling
- Hot flushes, sweating
- Cold flushes
- Choking, throat closing in
- Chest tightness and pain
- Stomach distress, nausea
- Crawling sensations on skin
- Numbing/tingling sensations
- Derealization/depersonalization
- Blurry vision/soft focus
- Fear of dying (heart attack, stroke)
- Fear of losing control
- Fear of going crazy

I also discuss the difference between panic attacks and Panic Disorder.  In Panic Disorder, a person has recurrent, out of the blue panic attacks and fears having future panic attacks or the implications of the panic attacks.  It can be a highly distressing and disabling condition, as the panic attacks and Panic Disorder can cause a person to begin avoiding more and more places and activities and feels safer in fewer and fewer places.
