Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the “gold standard” and most effective treatment for panic attacks and Panic Disorder.  What makes it so effective is that it helps a person understand why panic attacks happen and the factors that maintain Panic Disorder and it teaches skills to specifically disrupt the fear of fear cycle of panic.  The three main cognitive behavioral therapy skills for managing and controlling panic attacks are:
1) Relaxation training – used to bring down the overall levels of stress and tension and to help reduce anxious apprehension that can maintain Panic Disorder and panic attacks.
2) Exposure – this includes exposure to the physical sensations of panic (through exercises such as intentional hyperventilation and straw breathing) and exposure the situations and activities that have been avoided for fear that they may trigger panic (e.g., drinking coffee, exercising).
3) Cognitive restructuring – challenging thought patterns that contribute to the “Uh-Oh Thoughts” that drive the fear of fear cycle of panic attacks and Panic Disorder.
