The attack by the Kurdish
The attack by the Kurdish militant group is reportedly a continuation of clashes which erupted on June 15 in Oshnavieh. Meanwhile, clashes are reportedly ongoing between the IRGC and Kurdish forces on June 19 in the Rabat Region outside of Sardasht City, in West Azerbaijan Province. The events coincided with a statement on June 18 by the leader of the Kurdish group, in which he announced the renewed fight against the Iranian government.
The reported clashes come amidst a significant uptick in Kurdish militancy throughout western Iran’s predominantly Kurdish regions, where clashes have been ongoing over the past several days. In this context, the persistent fighting underscores the heightened threat of militancy stemming from Kurdish separatist groups in the region, likely spurred by the perceived marginalization of the Kurdish population in Iran, as well as motivated by perceived regional success of Kurdish groups fighting in Syria and Iraq. With this in mind, additional clashes will likely take place in Iran's predominantly Kurdish regions over the coming days and weeks, while in response, Iranian forces are likely to increase deployments of its forces to these areas.
