These step-by-step instructions and video detail how to replace the fuel filter in your 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003 Ford F-250 7.3-liter Super Duty. The replacement procedures will be similar for select Ford F-350, F-450, and F-550 7.3-liter models between 1999 and 2003, as well as select 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003 Ford E-350, E-450, and E-550 models. Replacing the fuel filter removes contaminants and dirt from the fuel before it enters your Ford’s fuel injectors, and can improve your truck’s engine performance, speed, and gas mileage. Your 1999 to 2003 Ford F-250’s owner’s manual will detail the replacement intervals, but if you notice a dirty or clogged fuel filter or reduced gas mileage, you can replace the fuel filter more often to ensure optimum performance.

Your Ford F-250’s fuel filter traps and removes sediment and debris from your truck’s fuel supply to avoid a clog in your diesel fuel injectors. Changing your 1999 to 2003 7.3-liter PowerStroke-equipped Ford F-250’s fuel filter is a simple task that can improve fuel economy, speed, and engine performance. It’s recommended that you change your Ford F-250’s fuel filter every 20,000 to 40,000 miles, but your truck’s service manual will detail the manufacturer’s maintenance intervals. A clogged fuel filter can cause your truck to shake when idling, struggle to accelerate at lower speeds, and can even cause your Ford F-250 to have trouble starting or running. Our detailed step-by-step instructions will help you perform an fuel filter installation on your 1999 to 2003 Ford F-250 with a 7.3-liter PowerStroke to help keep your truck running at its best.

Start by parking on a level surface… and opening the hood.
Use your 13mm socket and ratchet to remove the two 13mm nuts securing the engine cover.
Remove the cover so you can access the fuel filter housing underneath.
Next, you’ll drain the fuel in the housing.
The fuel filter housing drain can be accessed under the truck behind the front passenger tire.
Connect one end of the hose to the drain tube and put the other end in a container that can hold at
least 16 ounces and is safe to receive fuel.
On the back side of the fuel filter housing is a drain release lever.
Turn the lever clockwise to release the fuel.
[lower third: check local laws for instructions on fluid disposal]
Once the fuel has been drained and the pressure is relieved, loosen the fuel filter cap with a strap
wrench or pliers by positioning the jaws in the notches of the cap.
Remove the fuel filter cap… and filter.
The filter may drip excess fuel.
Place the filter in a drip pan to avoid extra cleanup.
Depending on the type of fuel filter that was previously installed, the fuel filter and cap might be one
piece or two pieces.
If the cap is separate, be sure to save it in case you need it for the new filter.
After the fuel has drained, close the drain lever.
Remove the hose and fuel drain container.
The new fuel filter should come with new O-rings, so make sure they’re included.
Coat the smaller O-ring with diesel fuel.
O-rings are exposed to high heat, and lubricating them can help keep them from sticking to the housing
and make them easier to remove during the next filter change.
Install the smaller O-ring on the plastic part of the filter.
Coat the larger, beveled O-ring with diesel fuel.
Set it around the fuel filter housing.
