In the year of 1577 AD Joannes Melo, a bellfounder in Vervulanus, Italy was to cast a sacred bronze Sanctus bell of the highest quality from the finest bronze available. But this was no ordinary bell for it carried upon it the icon of the Extreme Humility of Christ portraying Christ soon after his crucifixion.
The bell was to be hung in the church of St Giovanni Calabita on Tiber Island in Rome where it was to remain for the next three hundred and twenty three years. In 1900 the bell was about to be destroyed and smelted down but instead was rescued by a famous Victorian archaeologist and historian.
The bell was to make it to the shores of Britain only to be lost in the 1920's and not seen again !!
However in 2022 the bell was to be rediscovered once again by James Balme sitting in a garden near London being used as a garden ornament and unrecognised for its extreme importance. The bell is of extreme rarity and is one of just a handful of such bells to be found in Britain today..........
