The amygdala is the brain structure that regulates emotions such as fear and anxiety. When triggered, our brain and bodies go into a "fight, fight or freeze" mode that produce hormones to prepare our body for the impending danger.

Imagine how our ancestors must have felt if they heard a bear in the bushes. Their brains would remember this familiar sound, and their bodies would prepare to either fight or run. Hormones would increase their heart rates, and prioritize their bodies' muscles and eyesight.

When the part of the brain that is responsible for reasoning, thinking, planning, and decision-making is overridden, an "amygdala hijack occurs."

👇 ABOUT 👇
We believe the Catechism is not a textbook, a collection of ideas, or a set of rules. We believe it is the faithful echo of a God who desires to reveal himself to us. The mission of Real+True is to retransform the catechism into a living voice for the modern world. We’re creating videos, stories, animations, and podcasts, to unpack and unlock the catechism of the catholic church for the modern world. All these videos are free, and translated into multiple languages for the world.

Real+True is a project of OSV under the patronage of the Holy See and supported by people who join our mission.
